In acute crises, a kind of shock state often occurs with confusion and inappropriate behaviour (e.g. stereotypical movements). The ability to concentrate, attention and judgement can be impaired, as can the ability to make decisions.

Thinking is often severely restricted. Uncontrolled emotions can occur, e.g. very depressive or nervous reactions, which are also colloquially summarised as a "nervous breakdown". Physical symptoms may include headaches, fever, malaise or circulatory disorders.

As soon as there is an immediate danger to yourself or others (especially suicide risk) in such a situation, you should not hesitate to call a psychiatric emergency service, the emergency services (112) or the police (110) immediately.

If you are currently experiencing a mental health crisis, you can:

  • go to your doctor or call him,
  • Contact a hospital (psychiatric department),
  • Contact the medical (psychiatric) on-call service (EU-wide tel.: 116 117),
  • contact a help or counselling service for acute crisis situations, for example the telephone counselling service (www.telefonseelsorge.de), an anonymous, free 24/7 counselling service at 0800 – 1110111 or 0800 - 1110222
Our counselling service is free of charge for students of TU Bergakademie Freiberg and Hochschule Mittweida.
