Insurance for students - important protection for all areas of life

It is important for students to think about adequate insurance cover. Health insurance is compulsory for students. Household contents, liability and other insurances are relevant depending on the living and family situation and protect against financial risks in everyday life. In addition, the Studentenwerk Freiberg offers leisure accident insurance for all students, which is valid worldwide and around the clock. Students are also covered by statutory accident insurance for all university-related activities.

Insurances

Proof of valid health insurance is required for enrolment and re-registration for the new semester. As a rule, students are co-insured with their parents free of charge until their 25th birthday. In the case of military or voluntary service, the co-insurance is extended by the period of service. After that, you must take out your own health insurance.

If you receive BAföG, you will receive a subsidy for health and long-term care insurance as a person with compulsory or voluntary health insurance. A certificate from the relevant health insurance fund must be submitted. Orphan's pension recipients and students insured as employees are exempt from this regulation.

Enrolled students are insured under the statutory accident insurance scheme (SGB VII) for accidents resulting in physical injury. The insurance applies during university operations and on the direct route to and from the university. The insurance cover extends to all activities that are originally connected with attending a university.

The statutory accident insurance organisation for universities and colleges in Saxony is Unfallkasse Sachsen.

Every accident must be reported by the student or an authorised representative (witness) within three working days. Reports of commuting accidents are accepted by the Department of Student Affairs, other university accidents are reported to the person responsible for the event.

Before you take out your own liability insurance, it is highly advisable to take a look at your parents' policy. Basically, children are covered by their parents' liability insurance for as long as they are in education, their education follows on seamlessly from their school education and they still live in their parents' household. Many students move to a new place of residence when they start their studies.

Liability insurance is not a statutory compulsory insurance like motor vehicle liability insurance. However, everyone should ask themselves whether they can pay for the damage they cause to others and the resulting compensation claims out of their own pocket. Even the borrowed mobile phone that you accidentally drop or the glasses of the person next to you at the bank that you accidentally sit on can be ruinous for a student's budget. A visit to your trusted insurance agent is therefore worth hard cash.

Many students set up their first own household when they start studying. Whether you live in a hall of residence or in a shared flat, the question arises as to whether you should or even have to take out your own household contents insurance. There is no clear yes or no answer to this question. It therefore makes sense to discuss with your parents whether the contents of your student accommodation are covered by your parents' existing household contents insurance or not. In any case, it makes sense to take out your own policy if you own valuable or high-value furniture. Otherwise, you should consider whether you have the necessary funds to purchase new items or furniture that have been destroyed.
