Study abroad

With the increasing Europeanisation and globalisation of the world of work, a semester or internship abroad is no longer an extra, but something that your future employer will expect from an applicant with a university degree.

Study

To make it easier to plan a stay abroad, the International University Centre (IUZ) Freiberg and the International Office Mittweida (AAA) offer numerous information materials and provide advice on specific concerns and questions.

In addition, monthly information events are organised during the semester on the topic of "Studying abroad and internships" as well as special events with invited speakers on various topics.

Information on study opportunities and programmes, events and the relevant contact persons can be found on the respective websites of the higher education institutions.

BAföG abroad

It is often also possible to receive BAföG funding. However, as you cannot simply take the funding you receive in your home country with you, you should definitely seek advice from the Studentenwerk beforehand!

Cancelling your flat?

Depending on how long you are going abroad, the question will arise as to what will happen to the flat or shared flat here in Germany. As long as the tenancy agreement exists, rent must be paid and a second rent is due abroad.

For stays abroad of up to one semester, it is definitely advisable to look for a subtenant. This person does not become part of your tenancy, but the room is sublet to them.

Please note: You should obtain the landlord's permission for this in good time. Unauthorised subletting of living space can be grounds for termination. We do not know how other landlords will react to your request to sublet. It can be quite straightforward at the Studentenwerk, but it is still necessary to talk to the person responsible in good time.

Registration office

You are probably aware that you must register with the registration office within two weeks of your arrival in Germany. This deadline also applies if you move to another flat within Freiberg or to another city within Germany (re-registration). You must also deregister with the registration office if you return to your home country after the end of your studies.

You can get all the information you need at the citizens' offices in Freiberg or Mittweida.

Insurance abroad

Please find out in good time and in detail what insurance you need in the country you are travelling to. A discussion with an insurance broker is highly recommended.
